Lusters

Luster glazes, also known as “lusters”, are decorative overglazes applied to ceramic surfaces to create metallic and iridescent effects like gold leaf or mother-of-pearl. Lusters are applied over the vitrified glaze-fired piece and require a 3rd firing. They will take on the texture of the underlying surface, whether matte, satin, or gloss.  Lusters can be used on food surfaces, but care should be taken when cleaning to avoid scraping off the luster.

Safety note: luster is toxic before it is fired, so be sure to only apply luster in a well-ventilated area!
