Porcelain, or “china”, clay is white or translucent clay that is prized for dinnerware, vases, and other decorative objects. Made of mostly pure kaolin, there are three main types of porcelain:  hard paste, soft paste, and bone china. The most common type, hard-paste porcelain, is a “true” porcelain and usually includes feldspar or mica. As it is fired as high as cone 10, it has a lot of strength. We also offer mid-range porcelains, like our excellent Seattle Freeze, which are technically porcelaneous stoneware rather than true porcelains because they are not fired at cone 10. But they look like porcelain and act like porcelain, so we consider them porcelain (if it walks like a duck and quacks like a duck...). All porcelain clays are less plastic and therefore tend to be harder to work with. We recommend them for wheel throwing.
