Pottery Wheels

The smartphone is miraculous (so is the fork), but there is no tool in history that has so thoroughly inspired humankind as the potter’s wheel. There is something magical about gathering the requisite skills to harness centrifugal force and deny gravity. Our selection includes everything from portable wheels and commercial wheels, to kick wheels and wheelchair-accessible wheels. We carry the major brands: Shimpo, Brent, and Pacifica, as well as accessories such as bats, splash pans, and more!

What is a pottery wheel?

Pottery wheels are machines that are used to shape clay into radially symmetrical ceramic pieces by spinning. This process is called throwing on a wheel. Pottery wheels can be either electric or manual, and come in a variety of sizes and shapes. Pottery wheels are the basic tool of most potters, as they allow easy construction of uniformly round pieces:  plates, mugs, and bowls. They come in a variety of options, from kick-wheel (manually) driven to electric, and from small, portable versions like the Shimpo Aspire to large (but whisper-quiet) models like the Shimpo RK-Whisper.

Which pottery wheel is right for you?

The main considerations for choosing the right wheel for your needs are how much space you have, how much work you produce, what size work you produce, and how much storage you have—as well as some preference choices such as which direction you like to throw. You can read more about how to pick out a wheel in our guide, How to Choose the Right Pottery Wheel.
