A beautiful red clay body, very smooth and nice for throwing. We think it's the finest red earthenware clay body in North America—adaptable, smooth, and durable. We may be biased, but it's a truly excellent clay and trims like a dream. Highly recommended for a traditional terracotta look. Made with Redart Fireclay. Also offered with sand.

I remember hearing that terra cotta used for flower pots should be slightly under-fired (not fully vitrified). Does cone 04 accomplish this?
You are correct. Terracotta is a low-fire clay. This means that instead of vitrifying it does what we call sintering. Sintering allows for a higher absorption rate while still providing strength. This clay will achieve sinter at Cone 04 as you mentioned.

Is this clay suitable for floor tiles?

I would not recommend using this clay for floor tiles. Terracotta is a wonderful earthenware clay, however, due to it's high porosity it can degrade over time. I would recommend using a stoneware clay, like our Klamath Yellow, if you want a sturdier/ less absorbant floor tile.

Is this clay suitable for hand building
Yes! This clay is perfect for hand building. It fires with a gorgeous burnish when smoothed.

Is this suitable for cookware on gas stoves? Looking to find suitable clay that can withstand direct heat, not oven … most clays can be oven ware but for direct fire I’m clueless. Can you advise?

What is the absorption rate for this clay when fired to cone 1?
