Potassium Carbonate (K₂CO₃) is a white, water-soluble powder used in ceramics as a flux in glazes and clay bodies. It lowers the melting point of glazes, encourages glossy surfaces, and can enhance color development, especially in high-temperature stoneware and porcelain. In soda or salt firings, potassium ions interact with silica and alumina to create distinctive surface textures and flowing glaze effects.
Potassium Carbonate can be irritating if inhaled or ingested. Always wear gloves, a dust mask or respirator, and work in a well-ventilated area.
