Barium Carbonate (BaCO₃) is a white powder used in ceramics as a flux in glazes and to add durability to clay bodies. It lowers glaze melting points, promotes glossy surfaces, and can enhance opacity and color response.
Barium Carbonate can be used to tie up sulfate in casting slips and reduce salt leaching in red bodies. Barium carbonate is also a common source of barium oxide in glazes.
Barium Carbonate is toxic if ingested or inhaled, so it must be handled with care. Use gloves, a dust mask or respirator, and work in a well-ventilated area. Never use it on functional ware that will come into contact with food or drink unless it is fully encapsulated in a stable glaze.
