Sodium Bicarbonate (NaHCO₃) is a white powder used in ceramics primarily as a surface modifier during firing. When applied to hot clay or glazes, it decomposes to release carbon dioxide, creating textured effects such as blistering, bubbling, or subtle surface variations, especially in soda, salt, or pit firings.
Sodium Bicarbonate can be irritating if inhaled or ingested. Always wear gloves, a dust mask or respirator, and work in a well-ventilated area.
