Dolomite (CaMg(CO₃)₂) is a double carbonate mineral used in ceramics as a source of both calcium oxide (CaO) and magnesium oxide (MgO). It acts as a mild flux in glazes, helps stabilize the glaze melt, and can increase gloss and surface durability. In clay bodies, dolomite can reduce pyrometric cone melting range, improve thermal expansion properties, and contribute to fired hardness.
Dolomite dust contains magnesium and calcium compounds and may include trace silica — inhalation can irritate the respiratory system. Always wear gloves, a dust mask or respirator, and work in a well-ventilated area. Do not ingest, and wash hands thoroughly after handling.
