Pyrax (a trade name for pyrophyllite) is a hydrated aluminum silicate mineral similar in behavior to talc, often used in ceramic bodies and glazes to modify thermal expansion, reduce firing shrinkage, and improve strength in fast-fired or vitreous bodies. (digitalfire.com) Some grades, like Pyrax HS, promote early mullite formation, enhance thermal shock resistance, and help lower maturation temperatures. (digitalfire.com)
Can be irritating if inhaled or ingested. Always wear gloves, a dust mask or respirator, and work in a well-ventilated area. Do not ingest. Wash hands when done.
