Raku Clays and Glazes
In raku firing, ceramics are taken from the kiln while they are still glowing red hot and are placed in a flammable material such as sawdust or newspaper. This technique starves the piece of oxygen, which creates a myriad of colors within the glaze. The piece is then plunged into cold water to halt the firing process, which produces the signature crackling effect.
