Seattle Pottery Supply Raku Glaze

A matt metallic copper Raku glaze with an iridescent surface.
Directions: Stir thoroughly. Dilute with water if necessary. Brush, sponge, dip, or pour on properly matured bisque. Experiment, apply 1 thin coat. Fire when dry. For best results fire in Crucible Easy Riser Raku Kiln.
Raku glazes are formulated specifically for the raku firing process. In the raku process, pieces are removed from the kiln after standard firing and then put into a container filled with flammable material that burns and causes a reduction atmosphere (meaning there is no oxygen). When fired in this manner, these raku glazes create the vibrant colors and metallic look of raku pottery.
Note that raku glazes do not form a full glass, and are therefore not food safe or watertight. Use on clay designed specifically for Raku, such as our Pipenburg Raku, Raku, Raku II.
To apply: Always mix first before each use! Brush two to three coats on bisqueware (pottery that has been fired to cone 08 - 06) or dip for three to five seconds. If brushing, make sure to alternate the direction of the brush strokes between each coat for a smooth, even application, and let dry between coats.
Note that mixing glazes together or applying one on top of the other may cause the glazes to react differently than you expect. We recommend that you always test a new glaze combination and clay/glaze combination to see how it performs.

I bought several 5lbs bags there are no mixing instructions. How much water do add per pound?

Have loved this glaze! Usually get it already wet, but ordered dry this last round. Mixed 1000 grams glaze to 900 ml water. The fired results are very different. Looks thick and chalky. May have bubbled, not sure.Fired to about 1865° before pulling and reducing. Something I can do to improve the results?

Because this glaze is matte can it be applied under the pieces without being stick to the kiln shelve?
No. This product is still a glaze and will stick to a shelf or other pieces it is touching. The only products that will not stick to a shelf are underglazes.

Hello. I want to buy glaze for raku. I am going to fire it in a bonfire. What do you recommend?
RG152 needs to get to 1820 degrees Fahrenheit. You typically will not be able to get a bonfire this hot, meaning there will be no glaze effects.
Since you're doing a pit fire I would recommend looking into oxides. You can also use our Terra Sigillata which we carry in white and red. Other natural materials that can cause cool reactions are: copper wire, salt, sugar, seaweed, banana peels.

What happens if this is fired to come 5 or 6. Will it severely run if under a glaze coat or it is possible to fire to mid-range (even if it has no effect)?
It is possible to fire to mid-range! We have not done the testing for this since it's a little outside of the box. I encourage you to give it a shot! Definitely use a cookie and cross your fingers when testing. I wish you interesting results. -
can this raku glaze be used in traditional firing methods , electric kiln, say to cone 6 or 8?
Technically our Raku glazes are low-fire, cone 04-06. However, they will not be in a reduction environment and therefore not produce the same results in an electric kiln.
