Despite the fact we released it on April Fool’s Day, this clay is no joke (the name actually refers to the gold-mimicking mineral Pyrite). 

Fool’s Gold has a rich, warm, golden brown color with black flecks and an exemplary throwing ability. It has no absorption, and an extremely dense matrix when fired at cone 6, that still allows for early gassing in kiln to reduce chances of bubbles in glazes as well as body bloating if overfired. In general, it has great fired strength: perfect for tableware and drinkware. All pieces exhibit an extreme durability that will hold up in industrial dishwashers and the toughest things life has to throw at it.

  • Can this clay be used for bakeware?

    Thanks for asking! I would not recommend this clay for bakeware. It is a beautiful, smooth clay body, however this also means it is not as strong as a grogged clay. I don't believe that it would hold up during the intense heat-cool temperatures necessary for bake ware. 

  • I have trouble with this clay sticking to the wheel. I’ve used other clay on this same wheel and haven’t had any issues. Any tips?

    Thanks for asking! 

    We haven't heard any other feedback about issues with this clay being difficult to stick onto the wheel. Our basic recommendations are as follows: 

    -If your clay is a bit dried out, rehydrate with either a spritz of water before wedging, or use this method if it's really rock hard. 

    -Make sure you are wedging your clay when it comes out of the bag, this will realign the clay particles and allow the clay to move more fluidly on the wheel. 

    -Make sure the clay you're slamming down on the wheel is rounded on the bottom. Air pockets can be formed when slamming down a flat shape such as a flat bottomed cone, or cube. This can force the clay up and off the wheel head.

  • My studio only has ^6 glazes and ^6 clay. Can I treat Fool Gold as though it were a ^6 clay and it won’t slump, blister, or melt?

    We have seen Fool's Gold clay blister at ^6 and would recommend firing it at ^5. We haven't seen any slumping or melting at ^6. Midrange Glazes should work perfectly with this clay, as long as the firing temperature doesn't go much hotter than ^5.
