Our newest speckled clay, Hellborn Red is dark alchemy in action. It starts sunny yellow, but fires to a lush red/orange with flecks of black. Absolutely spectacular with white or blue/green glazes, like our SP15 Turquoise, to contrast and quench those flames of color and scatterings of ash.
Despite the name, it's a mild-mannered, easy-to-use mid-range stoneware, great for throwing and much, much more.
Available in 12lb cubes.
"Hellborn Red clay... has the perfect look for fall. I love how the raw clay surface pops with the white glaze, giving that earthy look that I am drawn to. If you have been thinking about trying a new clay body, this is definitely a great option! It is smooth and easy to throw, and there are endless possibilities with the speckles." ~ @pottery.by.kay
"The clay is such a lovely color - it’s like the best of both worlds from Klamath Yellow and Fools Gold" ~ @carolineclaycreations
"Throwing felt a lot like throwing Klamath Yellow but slightly stiffer. I love a good speckle so excited to get glaze on them. We love your red clays and the speckle adds a bit of flare as well." ~ @hue.organic
"It is soft to throw with slight grog to make it user-friendly, responsive, and forgiving on the wheel. If it had any more grog, I might shy away from it. I made a bud vase with a narrow neck with great ease, I was able to trim the base and details on the neck without the grog getting in the way or making deep grooves. Attaching a handle on the mug body felt great as the clay was able to firm up just enough to hold shape, but still plastic to bend into shape. The clay dries at a nice, even pace that seems to be less greasy than other dark clays that seem to have a slower drying time. Over all I loved my throwing experience with Hellborn Red and I can’t wait to get it fired and glazed!" ~ @a.f.pottery

*Please be aware that natural impurities may occasionally occur in our clay! Our clays are made with natural minerals, mined from the earth. In some rare cases, natural impurities, or ribbons of other minerals, are mixed in with the raw materials provided by our suppliers. This can lead to clays that don’t perform the way they are supposed to. If you have any questions about a particular clay body, please reach out to info@seattlepotterysupply.com.

Questions & Answers

Hi, are all your clays tested or free of lead? I see a mention of lithium and quartz.
We make it ourself and it has no lead. -
Does this red hellborn clay need to be fired separately from other clays or have manganese?
You can fire it with other clays, it has manganese speckles. -
Does this clay have manganese?
Yes -
How does this fire at Cone 6?
Hellborn fires well at cone 6, to almost a terra cotta color with dark speckles -
Is this clay supposed to be fired below cone 6? I have just glazed and fired a dozen test tiles with my studio's in house glazes and Seattle Pottery Supply's Dark Blue Mottled, Peacock and Purple glazes I ask about the firing temperature because I found that the Hellborn clay developed blisters during the glaze firing and also caused several glazes to run more than they did on the test tiles I fired at the same time using Standard Clay's "Angel White Stoneware" 182 and "Scott's Red Clay" 214. By the way, I am excited about this clay. I found it wonderful for throwing and was fascinated to see the terra cotta color once it had been bisque fired. I love the speckles and the deep red brown out of the glaze firing. I'm just wondering if this clay might perform better at cone 5. Thanks for taking my question.
This clay should be fine at cone 6, though if you are having issues it may be due to the inclusion of the speckles, which can often be the issue with our other speckled clays that are recommended to cone 5. You could also be firing on the hotter side of 6 meaning your pieces are getting closer to cone 7. You can try doing a witness cone to see if thats what's happening. That may be able to the issue so try doing it at cone 5. As far as running, some glazes are just not as compatible due to the ingredients, which means they may not be best on that clay. Alternatively you could try doing less coats further down to minimize running. -
What type of glazes should I use on my Hellborn red clay? Can I use Bluebell?
You can use Midrange glazes on this clay, but for specific glazes you will have to do your own testing. -
Could this be taken to a cone 10 firing?
This is a cone 4-6 clay and should not be taken to cone 10. -
