I fuse glass, will this mullite kiln shelf stand up to years of firings? What it mullite? Can it be kiln washed?
Mullite is a high temperature, refractory ceramic material that is used to make most types of kilns shelves as well as crucibles for melting metals.
We always recommend you wash these kiln shelves with kiln wash to protect them from melted glaze or melted glass.
Mullite kiln shelves are very durable and stand up to multiple years of firings. However, high temperature (2200F and above) will cause the shelves to slowly degrade. Fused glass temperatures will work just fine with these shelves.
