54-S Ball Clay is a high-plasticity Kentucky ball clay prized for its balanced combination of formability and strength. Its fine particle size distribution gives excellent green strength, good drying behavior, and strong performance when pressing, extruding, or casting. Because of its low total carbon and moderate firing color, 54-S offers better oxidation behavior and produces fewer defects than clays with more organics.

Kentucky ball clays are some of the most widely used clays in ceramics because of their exceptional plasticity, strength, and fine particle size. They provide green strength in forming, reduce cracking during drying, and improve glaze fit, making them essential in everything from studio pottery to industrial ceramic bodies. Their light firing color also makes them versatile in blending with other clays and fluxes.

Geologically, Kentucky ball clays formed over millions of years as feldspar-rich rocks weathered and broke down into fine particles. These sediments were carried by water and deposited in ancient basins, where low-energy conditions allowed extremely fine clay minerals (mainly kaolinite, with mica and quartz) to accumulate. Subsequent burial, compaction, and natural refining concentrated these clays into the pure, plastic seams mined today. This unique geological history gives Kentucky ball clays their rare balance of plasticity, strength, and consistency, making them a cornerstone of ceramic production worldwide.

*Please be aware that natural impurities may occasionally occur in our clay! Our clays are made with natural minerals, mined from the earth. In some rare cases, natural impurities, or ribbons of other minerals, are mixed in with the raw materials provided by our suppliers. This can lead to clays that don’t perform the way they are supposed to. If you have any questions about a particular clay body, please reach out to info@seattlepotterysupply.com.
