Borax 5 Mole (Na₂B₄O₇·5H₂O), also called Borax Pentahydrate, contains five moles of water of crystallization per formula unit. This means that for every molecule of sodium tetraborate, there are five water molecules chemically bound within its crystal structure. The “5 mole” distinction matters because it defines the compound’s hydration level—affecting both its weight and fluxing strength in ceramics.

Compared to the 10 mole (decahydrate) form, Borax 5 Mole is more concentrated in boron, less prone to losing water during storage, and produces a smoother melt with fewer bubbles when fired. It is often preferred in glazes and frits for its stability and consistency.

Borax can irritate the skin, eyes, and respiratory system. Always wear gloves, a dust mask or respirator, and work in a well-ventilated area. Avoid ingestion and wash hands thoroughly after handling.
