Anhydrous Borax (sodium tetraborate with little or no water of crystallization) is produced by fusing hydrated borax and regrinding it into a glassy powder. (DigitalFire) In ceramics, it is prized because it doesn’t “puff” or swell during melting, melts more cleanly, and provides a higher boron-to-weight ratio than hydrated forms. (DigitalFire)
Because it is a concentrated borate source, anhydrous borax must be handled with care: dust may irritate skin, eyes, and lungs, and borate compounds can be harmful if ingested. Always wear gloves, eye protection, a dust mask or respirator, and work in a well-ventilated area. Do not ingest, and wash hands thoroughly after use.
