This means each unit of sodium tetraborate contains ten moles of chemically bound water (water of crystallization).
That water content affects how the material behaves in ceramics:

Flux behavior: When heated, the ten water molecules are released between 150–300 °C, causing Borax to puff and lose weight before it melts and begins to flux.

Handling differences: Because of its water content, 10-mole borax is bulkier and less concentrated in boron than anhydrous (0-mole) or pentahydrate (5-mole) forms, so glaze recipes using different borax types must adjust by weight.

Storage: The decahydrate can lose water over time if exposed to air, altering its weight and chemistry slightly, so it’s best stored sealed and dry.
