Iron Oxide, Spanish Red

Which iron oxide looks most like rust. Is the powder only mixed with water and brushed on?

Rust is a natural process, so its color and texture can vary widely. Among our iron oxides, the Spanish Red tends to look the most natural, while the 84% and 98% synthetic red oxides are more refined and consistent. We also carry iron oxide black and iron oxide yellow, each with unique applications in glazes and clay bodies.

You can mix red iron oxide with just water and brush it on. However, if you’re looking for easier application and better adhesion, adding a suspending agent or thickener like Carboxymethylcellulose (CMC) or Veegum can improve brushability. This helps the oxide behave more like paint.

Since rust effects vary so much, some experimentation will be necessary to achieve the look you want.
