Our Midrange Mystery Clay is made from reclaimed clay ends and other pieces from our production process. Since we mix 'em all together, it means that, much like Dum-Dum's Mystery Flavor, when you buy a block of Mystery Clay, you won't really know what's in it. Other than it is a mixture of our mid-range clays and best at cone 5.
These blends (never the same mix twice) open the door to the world of the unpredictable, where every piece is an exciting surprise. Even better? We're letting them go at an unbeatable price, so this is perfect clay to play around with.
*Please be aware that natural impurities may occasionally occur in our clay! Our clays are made with natural minerals, mined from the earth. In some rare cases, natural impurities, or ribbons of other minerals, are mixed in with the raw materials provided by our suppliers. I see the recommended fire temp is cone 5. Can this clay also successfully be fired to cone 6?
You can do a test tile to check, but it's not recommended as there is no way to track if the clay has inclusion that may cause bloat at cone 6 such speckles we add or the ingredients that make the clays darker. -
I know you say you mix them all together, but the pictures show different colors with the labels "mystery clay". Are there different families of clays like yellows or reds that you try to keep together? Can I buy the red "mystery clay" that's all different reds mixed together vs a yellow "mystery clay"?
If you are ordering online, the clay is picked at random by our shipping team. If you are in store, you can make an educated guess based on the tone of the clays and what the labeled clays are. But they truly are a mixture and we don't keep track.
