Nepheline Syenite (NaAlSiO₄·KAlSiO₄) is a naturally occurring feldspathic rock used in ceramics as a flux to lower firing temperatures and promote vitrification. It provides sodium and potassium oxides that help form glossy, smooth glazes and improve the density and strength of clay bodies. In mid- and high-fire ceramics, it functions similarly to feldspar but melts more readily, making it especially useful in stoneware and porcelain formulations.
Dust can irritate the lungs, skin, and eyes due to its silica content. Always wear gloves, a dust mask or respirator, and work in a well-ventilated area. Avoid ingestion and wash hands thoroughly after handling.
