USG No. 1 Pottery Plaster (Discontinued)
SKU: 72192-5LB Brand: US Gypsum
$14.68
USG has stopped making No. 1 Pottery Plaster, and we have sold our last retail bags. In 2026, US Gypsum closed the Oklahoma plant that made No. 1, Hydrocal, Hydro-Stone and its other specialty plasters.
Our replacement is Arcosa Pottery Plaster, a pottery plaster for slip-casting molds made by Arcosa Specialty Materials. Mix it the same way as No. 1: 70 parts water to 100 parts plaster, by weight. How the two compare, and what to test before you switch.
About USG No. 1 Pottery Plaster
For decades No. 1 was the standard plaster for slip-casting molds: a porous, absorbent plaster that pulls water out of casting slip. USG's published figures: 70 parts water per 100 parts plaster, 2,400 psi dry compressive strength, 0.21% maximum setting expansion.

Questions & Answers

Would your pottery plaster work well for making plaster wall hangings, Christmas ornaments and other decor items? I have used plaster of Paris but it seems rather fragile in the end product
Plaster by nature is fragile, I would recommend an air dry clay. It will be lighter and more sturdy. -
Is the #1 Pottery Plaster USG #1 Pottery Plaster?
