Want to light up your studio? Seattle Freeze is a brand new translucent mid-range clay body (yes, you read that right). Intended for use on the wheel, it throws like a dream with a creamy, yet firm, consistency.

One of the very few translucent mid-range clays out there—and, in our opinion, the best. Most translucent porcelains are high-fire, which makes them less accessible for the majority of potters; Seattle Freeze has the translucence of cone 10... but at cone 5.

NOTE: Seattle Freeze can harden when stored. To return it to working consistency, wedge hard (we recommend throwing it on the floor with force), then wedge as normal. Do not add water!

In order to make sure all batches of this clay are as creamy, smooth, and buttery as they should be, we’ve updated our clay machine, implemented a double-vacuum process, and increased our quality control. This ensures that all bags of Seattle Freeze that leave our workshop are now of uniform high quality.

To use: wedge wet clay, work as preferred, and fire to ∆ 5. Use with mid-range glazes.

Hi, My 2 questions pertain to the Seattle Freeze Porcelain. Does this clay body contain a hallocyte? How thin does this this clay body have to be for translucency? Thanks, Andrea.

Seattle freeze is translucent between 1/4" and 3/8" thickness, however this can vary. Freeze doesn't contain Halloysite.
I was hoping I could get more info on your sp691 Seattle Freeze clay. It says cone 4-6 but best at 5--do I need to watch out for it getting soft at 6, or are there other reasons 5 is better? Also, I couldn't find vitrification/porosity info. Can you tell me expected porosity at cones 5 and 6? Thank you.

At cone 6, the Seattle Freeze can begin to bubble, causing surface roughness and glaze defects. The absorbtion rate at cone 5 is 0%.
Hi there, I see that this is best at cone 5. I use a community kiln that always fires to cone 6. Does it start losing translucence at that heat level? What change in quality happens at cone 6, please?

At cone 6, the clay doesn't lose translucency, but can instead start to bubble at the surface, causing surface texture deformation and glaze issues.
Would this clay be okay for hand-building?

While you can hand-build with the Seattle Freeze, it's a clay that is designed for throwing and has some difficulties when being used for handbuilding. You have to make sure everything is very well compressed or there is a high risk of cracking.
Hi! I purchased a bag of Seattle Freeze. I was told by my open studio manager that it isn't actually porcelain. Can you please verify if this is actually porcelain, or a porcelain substitute? Thank you so much!

The Seattle Freeze is a mid-range white translucent clay made with primarily kaolin. Traditionally, porcelain has referred to white clay that is fired to cone 10. However, due to modern fluxes and clay technology, we can create fine white clay bodies made primarily of kaolin that vitrify at lower temperatures, such as cone 5 and 6. The answer is mostly a matter of semantics and whether you define a porcelain by the temperature it is fired to. The Seattle Freeze is a mid-range porcelain, which, to some traditional potters, is an oxymoron.
