Silicon Carbide (SiC) FFF (325 mesh and finer) is a highly refractory, hard crystalline compound used in ceramics as a reducing agent and texture modifier in glazes and clay bodies. In glazes, it promotes carbon trapping and reduction effects, creating mottled, metallic, or cratered surfaces, especially in raku or reduction firings. In clay bodies, it can enhance thermal conductivity and reduce oxidation of certain materials during firing.
Silicon Carbide dust is hazardous if inhaled and can cause lung irritation or long-term respiratory issues due to its sharp crystalline particles. Always wear a properly fitted respirator, gloves, and eye protection. Work in a well-ventilated area or under local exhaust ventilation. Do not ingest, and wash hands and exposed skin thoroughly after handling.
