Bismuth Subnitrate (Bi₅O(OH)(NO₃)₄) is a white or pale-yellow compound used in ceramics and glazes primarily as a colorant and opacifier. Under reduction, it can produce subtle gold to bronze surfaces and interesting metallic effects in specialty glazes.
Bismuth compounds can be hazardous if inhaled or ingested, potentially affecting the kidneys and liver over prolonged exposure. Always wear gloves, a dust mask or respirator, and work in a well-ventilated area. Do not ingest. Wash hands thoroughly after handling.
