Sodium Nitrate (NaNO₃) is a soluble flux used in ceramics and glaze formulation to promote melting and enhance gloss at lower firing temperatures. It decomposes during firing, releasing oxygen and sodium oxide, which help smooth glaze surfaces and improve color response, particularly in low- and mid-fire glazes. It can also be used as a deflocculant in small quantities for slip preparation.
Sodium Nitrate is an oxidizing compound and should be handled carefully. Dust or contact may irritate skin, eyes, and respiratory passages. Avoid contact with combustible materials and store in a dry, cool area away from organics. Always wear gloves, a dust mask or respirator, and work in a well-ventilated area. Do not ingest. Wash hands thoroughly after handling.
