Originally only available as part of our Speckled Clay Flight, Driftwood got such rave reviews that it is now available on its own! The result of 6+ months of research and development, it's a cream-colored speckled dream. It fires to a warm white with flecks of black-brown. The speckles develop mild to maximum depending on your firing range from cone 5 through cone 7. Absolute core with SP217 White for that cottage look, or try our SP52 Shadow Green to see those metallic flecks really shine.
It is a mild-mannered, easy-to-use mid-range stoneware, great for throwing and much, much more.
Note: the speckles do now show until glaze firing, usually around cone 4! They will darken the higher the firing temperature.
Available in 12lb cubes
To use: wedge wet clay, work as preferred, and fire to ∆ 5. Use with mid-range glazes.
*Please be aware that natural impurities may occasionally occur in our clay! Our clays are made with natural minerals, mined from the earth. In some rare cases, natural impurities, or ribbons of other minerals, are mixed in with the raw materials provided by our suppliers. This can lead to clays that don’t perform the way they are supposed to. If you have any questions about a particular clay body, please reach out to info@seattlepotterysupply.com.

Questions & Answers

Is sp659 driftwood clay contain manganese? I am concerned about pinholes. Thank you
Yes Driftwood's speckles are small manganese bits. -
Safe for dinnerware at cone 6?
When properly fired, yes Driftwood is safe to use as dinnerware with at least a clear glaze on top. In order to be food safe, the inside and area the mouth touches should have at minimum a clear glaze to protect the clay and create a barrier to protect from food, acids, etc.Due to the speckles in Driftwood, at higher kiln temperatures (cone 6 and up) the clay may bloat, which can make it not safe. Please check all pieces. -
IIs it good for handbuiling?
Yes, driftwood is nice for handbuilding, it has a slightly sandy texture but can be smoothed nicely. -
the promotion on google says fast and free shipping, but on the web site it says it ships in a flat rate box. How do I get the fast and free shipping
I'm not sure where that promotion came from but we don't have free shipping except on our clay flights. -
Are the speckles in this clay created using manganese like the gray speckle clay?
Yes they are a mixture of Manganese and Magnetite
