Kentucky #5 Ball Clay is a high-plasticity clay prized for its strength, workability, and smooth texture. It blends well with other clays to improve green strength, reduce cracking during drying, and enhance the overall plasticity of ceramic bodies. Its light firing color makes it versatile for both stoneware and porcelain blends, providing consistent performance in throwing, casting, and extrusion.
Substitutes for Kentucky #5 include OM-4, which offer similar plasticity and firing characteristics, though slight adjustments may be needed in clay body recipes to match shrinkage and color.
Kentucky ball clays are some of the most widely used clays in ceramics because of their exceptional plasticity, strength, and fine particle size. They provide green strength in forming, reduce cracking during drying, and improve glaze fit, making them essential in everything from studio pottery to industrial ceramic bodies. Their light firing color also makes them versatile in blending with other clays and fluxes.
*Please be aware that natural impurities may occasionally occur in our clay! Our clays are made with natural minerals, mined from the earth. In some rare cases, natural impurities, or ribbons of other minerals, are mixed in with the raw materials provided by our suppliers. This can lead to clays that don’t perform the way they are supposed to. If you have any questions about a particular clay body, please reach out to info@seattlepotterysupply.com.
