Cerium Oxide (CeO₂) is a rare-earth oxide most often used in ceramics as a glaze colorant and opacifier. It can produce soft yellow, cream, or pale orange tones in oxidation and is sometimes used in specialty glazes for unique surface effects. Beyond ceramics, it is also widely used as a polishing compound for glass and stone due to its fine abrasive qualities. Cerium is relatively expensive because it is a rare-earth element, requiring complex mining and refining processes, which adds to its cost and limited availability in ceramics.

Dust can irritate the respiratory system and eyes. Prolonged exposure should be avoided. Always wear gloves, a dust mask or respirator, and work in a well-ventilated area. Do not ingest, and wash hands thoroughly after handling.
