Talc (Mg₃Si₄O₁₀(OH)₂) is a magnesium silicate mineral used in ceramics as a flux and a source of magnesium oxide. It helps lower firing temperatures, improves thermal expansion control, and contributes to matte surface effects in glazes. In clay bodies, talc enhances strength, reduces shrinkage, and improves thermal shock resistance, making it a common ingredient in low-fire earthenware and industrial ceramics.
Dust can cause respiratory irritation and may contain trace crystalline silica. Always wear gloves, a dust mask or respirator, and work in a well-ventilated area. Avoid ingestion and wash hands thoroughly after handling.
